The hero whose viral photo showed him shielding a woman with his own body during the Las Vegas shooting has been revealed as U.S. Army soldier Matthew Cobos.
As gunshots rained down all around them, Cobos threw himself on top of a terrified woman to protect her from getting shot. Afterward, Cobos and the woman ran to safety.
Cobos then rushed back to help others at the Route 91 Harvest music festival, where a country-music concert became a killing field for 22,000 fans. The unidentified woman is alive, thanks to the selfless bravery of Matthew Cobos.
Cobos was trying to cover the woman’s eyes to keep her from seeing the carnage around them when Getty photographer David Becker snapped the now-iconic picture, the Daily Mail reported.
“I don’t know if she was injured, but he was very clearly shielding her with his body and protecting her,” Becker said in a statement. “I saw them both get up and run away … People were cowering, they were very fearful for their lives.”
Sources told the Daily Mail that Cobos helped other victims during the massacre by crazed madman Stephen Paddock.
In one instance, Cobos reportedly used his belt to stop the bleeding in a victim who had been shot. In another instance, Matthew plugged a victim’s bullet hole with his fingers.
Cobos, who lives in Hawaii, is a cavalry scout with the U.S. Army. He is now back home with his family in California.
Countless questions still linger about gunman Stephen Paddock, as authorities remain baffled by what drove him to kill 59 people and injure almost 500.
The FBI has questioned Paddock’s live-in girlfriend Marilou Danley, who returned to the United States on Tuesday. Danley — an Australian citizen who had been in the Philippines since September 22 — voluntarily returned to America to answer questions about Paddock, who committed the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Police said Danley was a “person of interest” after a cache of weapons, ammunition, and explosives were found at the home she had shared with Paddock in Mesquite, Nevada. Records show Paddock had wired more than $100,000 to Marilou’s home in the Philippines shortly before his shooting rampage.
