Obama Is About to Become the Country’s Most Expensive Former President

He might be out of the White House, but Americans are not yet done paying former President Barack Obama’s bills.

In 2018, Obama will cost taxpayers $1,153,000, according to a Congressional Research Service memo first obtained by The Washington Times.

The total — which is more than $100,000 higher than former President George W. Bush’s request and almost $200,000 more than former President Bill Clinton’s — is the highest of the five living ex-presidents.

Former Presidents George H.W. Bush and Jimmy Carter are slated to receive $942,000 and $456,000, respectively.

The money is coming from the Former Presidents Act, which became law in 1958 and provides former commanders in chief with lifetime benefits after they step out from behind the Resolute Desk.

While each president receives an annual pension of at least $205,700, they are also able to request money from Congress for staff salaries, an office allowance, travel monies, and Secret Service protection.

Obama’s Washington, D.C., office is the most expensive, according to the Times. The space will reportedly cost taxpayers a whopping $536,000 in 2018. By comparison, Clinton’s New York City office will cost $518,000, while George W. Bush’s Dallas office will cost $497,000.

The cheapest costs come from George H.W. Bush’s Houston office space — $286,000 — and Carter’s Atlanta office space — $115,000.

Spending lots of money is nothing new for any president. However, Obama certainly drew the ire of many conservatives over his eight years in the White House for what many saw as frivolous spending.

In fact, over his tenure in the West Wing, the Obamas spent more than $85 million — that’s more than $10 million a year — on vacation, according to numbers revealed by the right-leaning Judicial Watch in 2016.

President Donald Trump has received some criticism for his frequent traveling, too. In the first 13 weeks of his administration, he spent more than half of his weekends away from the White House, PolitiFact reported. Those trips are also quite expensive.
